Service-learning trip to El Salvador for teens
to visit projects started by released Friend, Carmen
Broz.
July 2008
Three weeks are offered this year, and
you can sign up for one week, two weeks, or all three!
Each week will include:
· 12 teens (ages 13-18)
· 3-4 adults from the U.S. and El Salvador (all bilingual)
· visits to rural communities to work and meet with youth and
community leaders
· a tour of the local area
· learning some Salvadoran history and culture, as well as the
effects
of United States involvement in Central America
· some sightseeing and some play
· worship-sharing

Week 1 |
July 6*-13 (7 nights) |
Intensive language program at the
Pajaro Flor Community Language
Center in Suchitoto,
with opportunities for cultural exchange and excursions to El
Bario and San Salvador. Some service work included. Accommodations
in hostel “Casa de Los Artes Para La Paz.” |
Week 2 |
July 13*-20 (7 nights) |
Intensive service opportunity in two Morazan
communities, including beginning a bathroom with running water
for the El Gigante Community Center and work on the communal buildings
in Los Suenos. Mural project in conjunction with the Walls
of Hope Art School in Perquin.**Pre-requisite:
A communicative level of Spanish or enrollment in Week 1. |
Week 3 |
July 20*-27
(7 nights) |
Varied service and learning experiences in the
Suchitoto area and closest communities. Accommodations in hostel
“Casa de Los Artes Para La Paz” and one night home-stay. |
Air Travel Arrangements: Participants
will make their own arrangements on United
Airlines
from Oakland, California, returning to San Francisco (currently $622.30.)

Adult Participants/Chaperons:
1) Adult participants who pay their own way are welcome on a space-available
basis for Week 1. Teen participants have first priority.
2) We are seeking one adult chaperon (expenses paid) for each week.
Adult chaperons must be at least 21 years old, have an intermediate
working knowledge of Spanish, be responsible, and have references from
their Meeting. AVP/HIPP or Quaker Camp experience would be useful.
